In a significant crackdown on illegal mining, the Western Regional Police Command arrested 15 individuals, comprising seven Chinese nationals and eight Ghanaians, during a raid on February 22, 2025. The operation targeted unauthorized mining activities along the Ankobra River in the Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira District

Authorities seized ten excavators and other mining equipment from sites in Abelebo and Akango, where the suspects were reportedly operating directly within the river. This activity has contributed to severe environmental degradation, including water pollution and destruction of aquatic ecosystems.

A senior police official emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining, stating that such activities will no longer be tolerated and that those involved will face prosecution. The arrested individuals are currently in custody, assisting with investigations, and are being processed for court proceedings.

This operation is part of a broader effort to combat ‘galamsey,’ which poses significant threats to Ghana’s natural resources and communities. The government continues to deploy security personnel to mining areas to prevent further illegal activities and protect vital water bodies like the Ankobra River.
