Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, during his vetting as Minister for the Interior, made a strong case for the enforcement of body cameras within the Ghana Police Service. His decision stems from alarming incidents of police misconduct, including extortion, harassment, and abuse of power.

One of the main reasons for this initiative is the rising cases of suspicious deaths and missing persons in police custody. Hon. Mubarak recounted a tragic case where a man, imprisoned for a minor offense, was found dead the next day. Reports suggested that the deceased had been severely beaten while in police custody. Such cases have created public outrage, eroding trust in law enforcement.

He also highlighted the infamous Ejura incident, where police and military personnel were accused of using excessive force on unarmed protesters. These events, coupled with reports of officers collecting bribes at roadside checkpoints, show a systemic problem of abuse of power by law enforcement. Many citizens have reported being mistreated, intimidated, or extorted during interactions with police officers.

By enforcing body cameras, Hon. Mubarak seeks to address these issues head-on. He explained that body cameras would record all interactions between police officers and citizens, acting as an impartial witness. This measure will not only deter officers from misconduct but also provide evidence in cases of disputes, ensuring that justice is served.

The move is part of a broader agenda to restore public trust in the police and to hold officers accountable for their actions. Hon. Muntaka Mubarak stated,

“No one should die or go missing in police custody without answers. This initiative will protect both citizens and officers.”
