Several Agbogbloshie traders are set to appear in court for defying the Clean Ghana sanitation directive, despite multiple warnings from authorities.
The Clean Ghana Task Force conducted an operation on October 29, 2025, targeting traders who continued to operate under poor sanitary conditions at the Agbogbloshie Market. The team had previously issued relocation and hygiene orders to improve market cleanliness, but many traders ignored the directive.
Director of the Clean Ghana Campaign, Florence Kuukyi, stated that the task force would continue to enforce sanitation laws until traders fully comply.
“Believe you me, if I remove this pallet, you’ll see rotten yams inside the drain. They push waste into the gutters and cover it up. If we cannot arrest the people, we’ll arrest the products,” she told JoyNews.
Spokesperson for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Gilbert Ankrah, urged both the media and the public to support the initiative. He emphasized that maintaining clean markets requires shared responsibility.
“The streets are not for selling, and we need the media to help spread that message. There are empty spaces in the markets, yet some traders keep returning to the streets,” he said.
The Clean Ghana Campaign, spearheaded by the AMA, has intensified its operations in major commercial areas such as Agbogbloshie. The campaign aims to restore order, enforce sanitation laws, and promote environmental hygiene across the capital.
Officials say the latest swoop is part of renewed efforts to ensure traders comply with hygiene and safety regulations to prevent disease outbreaks and protect public health.
