Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has dismissed calls for legal action against Alan Kyerematen’s rebranded United Party, describing it as a waste of time and resources.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Kukurantumi show, Obiri Boahen urged the NPP to ignore the newly formed group, saying that giving it attention would only make it appear more significant than it is.
“We shouldn’t tolerate them because it will make them feel important. What hasn’t happened before?” he said.
His remarks followed a statement by Walewale MP, Kabiru Tia, who revealed that the NPP was considering legal steps over the use of the ‘United Party’ name — a title with deep historical roots in Ghana’s political landscape.
But Obiri Boahen believes such a decision would be misguided and unnecessary.
“Why go to court over this? The United Party is dead on arrival,” he stressed, calling Alan Kyerematen’s movement nothing more than “a yellow T-shirt group.”
He advised the NPP to focus on national issues instead of engaging in what he described as a distraction.
“Any serious politician, intellectual, or academic will tell you to ignore them. Even Cheddar’s movement performed better in the 2024 elections,” he added.
According to him, true political maturity requires patience and perspective. He urged the party’s current leadership to emulate the wisdom of past NPP stalwarts such as B.J. Da Rocha and Appiah Minkah, who often avoided unnecessary political skirmishes.
“We need to be serious in this country. There are pressing issues like galamsey still hanging on our necks. No serious-minded person will give credence to this issue,” he concluded.
