Accra, Ghana – Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that it will begin charging additional taxes and levies on its services in Ghana, effective March 1, 2025. The move is in compliance with local tax regulations, which require AWS to apply these charges.
According to Amazon, the new taxes include a 6% levy comprising the National Health Insurance Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy, and the Covid-19 Health Recovery Levy. Additionally, a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) will be imposed on all service charges.
The changes will affect all AWS customer accounts registered in Ghana, with VAT invoices issued accordingly from the effective date. AWS has advised customers to review and update their account details, particularly those who are VAT-registered businesses.
Customers with a Tax Registration Number (TRN) are encouraged to ensure their information is up to date to facilitate VAT deductions where applicable. AWS has urged affected customers to liaise with their internal tax and accounting teams to ensure compliance before the March 1 deadline.
The new tax obligations may have implications for companies relying on AWS infrastructure in Ghana. Businesses are expected to factor in the additional costs as they continue to leverage AWS services for digital transformation and operations.
AWS’s decision to impose new taxes on its Ghanaian customers is in line with the government’s efforts to increase tax revenue and promote compliance. The move is likely to impact businesses across various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and education, which rely heavily on cloud computing services.
