The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has announced that the Bank of Ghana will soon begin developing and testing the e-Cedi payment system, a digital version of Ghana’s currency aimed at transforming financial transactions.

She explained that the initiative is part of government efforts to modernize the financial sector and expand the use of technology in economic activities. The e-Cedi was first introduced in 2021 under the leadership of then-Governor Dr. Ernest Addison as a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) designed to serve as a digital alternative to physical cash.

Speaking at the launch of the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Cedi in Accra on Tuesday, the Vice President highlighted the e-Cedi’s potential to strengthen Ghana’s financial system.

“If the e-Cedi payment system is implemented, it will promote a cashless economy, increase financial inclusion, and reinforce confidence in the cedi as Ghana’s only legal tender,” she stated.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the rapid changes in global finance demand innovation and adaptability. She added that once fully rolled out, the e-Cedi will modernize Ghana’s payment infrastructure and ensure the cedi remains relevant in the digital age.

The Vice President encouraged the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance to collaborate closely with banks, fintech companies, and the private sector to ensure a smooth and inclusive rollout of the system.

She also commended Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Finance, and Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, for their contributions to maintaining macroeconomic stability and restoring public trust in the national currency.

“Through effective monetary policies and clear communication, the Bank of Ghana has anchored market expectations and strengthened confidence in the cedi,” she remarked.

The introduction of the e-Cedi payment system marks a significant step toward Ghana’s digital financial future, reinforcing the nation’s vision of a modern and cashless economy.
