Tensions are rising in Kwahu Behenase following a dispute between the family of a 52-year-old woman who was allegedly murdered and the Nkawkaw police command over the cost of an autopsy.

According to reports, the grieving family has declined to take custody of the deceased’s body, claiming they cannot afford a GH¢12,000 autopsy fee demanded before the body’s release.

The deceased’s brother, Agya Noah, told journalists that the family’s financial challenges make it impossible to pay the full amount, adding that they can only offer GH¢2,000. The disagreement has resulted in a standoff between the family and the authorities.

However, Nkawkaw District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Victor Kwakye, clarified in an interview with Adom News that while the family was informed about the mandatory autopsy process, the police never quoted any specific fee.

He explained that under Ghanaian law, an autopsy must be performed before any body involved in a suspected homicide can be released to relatives.

Chief Supt. Kwakye encouraged the family to engage directly with the medical personnel to negotiate a possible reduction in the fee, considering their financial hardship.

He further advised that if the relatives remain unsatisfied, they could explore legal measures to resolve the matter.

Meanwhile, police investigations into the Behenase murder case are ongoing as both parties work toward settling the disagreement over the autopsy cost.
