Bono East Regional Minister, Francis Owusu Antwi, has urged chiefs and traditional leaders in the region to put peace and development above protracted chieftaincy and land disputes, noting that conflicts drain resources and stall progress.
He made the appeal during a grand durbar to launch the Nkyifie@60 festival in Prang, stressing that stability is essential for the region’s growth.
“Our region has limited time and resources, which must be dedicated to development rather than disputes and conflicts. I encourage chiefs and kingmakers to follow traditions, customs, and the legal framework in succession issues. Chieftaincy disputes waste resources meant for development and push us backwards,” Mr. Antwi said.
Security Measures Against Armed Robbery
The Minister also raised concerns about persistent armed robbery incidents in Bono East. He, however, assured residents that new security interventions, supported by President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Interior, were already reducing the frequency of attacks.
“One of our major challenges has been armed robbery, but significant interventions have been put in place to curb these incidents. The President has assured that any number of police officers required will be deployed to maintain peace and security,” he added.
He further linked highway robberies to poor road networks, revealing that criminals often take advantage of bad roads to target travelers. According to him, government remains committed to completing major road projects.
“The Prang to Kintampo road will not be abandoned until the contractor finishes the work. Patching works on the Ejura-Atebubu-Yeji road will also commence soon to improve movement,” he disclosed.
Focus Areas for Lasting Peace
Speaking on behalf of President Mahama, Mr. Antwi noted that government’s focus in Bono East is on chieftaincy disputes, land conflicts, and farmer-Fulani tensions.
“The President is determined to find lasting solutions to these challenges, as they are critical to ensuring peace and sustainable development in Bono East,” he stressed.
The event, attended by dignitaries including Pru West MP Emmanuel Kofi Ntekuni, District Chief Executives, and regional leaders, also celebrated the achievements of Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III, who was praised for his contributions to peace and development.
The Nkyifie@60 launch featured rich cultural displays, drumming, and dancing, symbolising six decades of unity and tradition under Nana Nyarko III’s leadership.
