A tragic incident occurred during a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC on February 1, 2025. Francis Frimpong, known as Pooley, a devoted Kotoko supporter, was stabbed to death at Nana Koramansah Park in Nsoatre, Bono Ahafo region. The violence unfolded both during and after the match.
The match intensified in the second half, with players clashing and the referee issuing four red cards. However, the situation escalated after the final whistle. Rival supporters clashed in the stands, and Pooley was stabbed in the chest, near his heart. Eyewitnesses recalled the frightening scene, with one saying, “I was seated below Hon. Baffour Awuah when the fight started on the pitch. Kwasi Appiah, Kotoko’s Head of Technical Directorate, rushed downstairs to calm things down.”
Despite immediate medical attention and transport to the Nsoatre Ghana Health Service, Pooley tragically passed away from his injuries. Asante Kotoko condemned the violence and revealed that sections of the home supporters had been hostile toward the visitors from the start. The club has called for justice for Pooley and an end to such violence.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) also expressed sorrow over the incident. The GFA promised a thorough investigation to identify and punish the perpetrators. They also vowed to enhance security at all football venues to prevent future tragedies.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need to tackle hooliganism in football. The community mourns Pooley’s loss and emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all fans. Everyone involved in the sport must work together to preserve the true spirit of the game and protect its supporters.
