The Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) has released its final report on Ghana’s 2024 general elections, praising the process as transparent, credible, and peaceful. The report commends the professionalism of polling officials, security agencies, and party agents, as well as the calm atmosphere maintained throughout the elections.
The COG, led by former Botswana President HE Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, observed the elections that saw John Dramani Mahama elected as Ghana’s 14th president. The group was deployed by Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC.
While commending Ghana’s democratic progress, Secretary-General Scotland encouraged Ghana’s institutions to adopt the group’s recommendations. The report highlights areas for improvement, including enhanced transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the electoral process.
Key Recommendations:
- Robust Regulatory Framework for Campaign Financing: The report reiterates the need for a robust regulatory framework to prevent corruption and increase transparency in campaign financing.
- Addressing Delays in Announcing Results: The COG urges the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to address delays in announcing results from constituencies to strengthen public confidence in the process.
The final report has been distributed to the Ghanaian government, political parties, the EC, and other stakeholders for review and implementation.
