In a groundbreaking development for Ghana’s aviation industry, the Ghana Airports Company Ltd (GACL), in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, has announced the launch of direct flights between London Gatwick and Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi.
The new service, commencing on December 3, 2024, will significantly enhance connectivity between Ghana and the United Kingdom. Flights will depart London Gatwick at 2:10 am, arriving in Kumasi at 9:05 am. This direct route eliminates the need for layovers in Accra or other destinations, offering passengers a faster and more convenient travel option.
This initiative is poised to boost economic activity and tourism in the Ashanti Region, home to iconic attractions such as the Kumasi Fort and Manhyia Palace Museum. By linking Kumasi directly to London, the route aims to position the region as a key player in Ghana’s tourism industry, which has seen steady growth in recent years.
Press Release
GACL has emphasized that this new route aligns with its mission to expand Ghana’s aviation network and strengthen international connections. Ethiopian Airlines, a leading African carrier with a strong presence in Ghana, has played a pivotal role in making this route a reality. The airline already operates multiple weekly flights from Accra to Addis Ababa and other global destinations.
The launch comes amid a period of significant growth in Ghana’s aviation sector, marked by increased investment in infrastructure, such as the expansion of Kotoka International Airport in Accra and ongoing development at Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi.
The new London-Kumasi route is expected to enhance competition in the market while providing passengers with greater options and convenience.
For the Ashanti Region, this direct link to the UK is a game-changer. Beyond boosting tourism, it is expected to drive economic development by fostering trade, investment, and cultural exchanges.
This direct flight service represents a major milestone for Ghana’s aviation and tourism sectors, reinforcing the country’s position as a hub for travel and business in West Africa.
