In a stern address on Adom TV Online on Monday, March 10, 2025, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, highlighted driver indiscipline as one of the leading causes of Ghana’s escalating road accidents. Speaking on the popular program “The Pulse,” Mr. Amaliba expressed his deep concern over the worsening safety conditions on the nation’s roads.

“Upon assuming office, I observed that while many factors contribute to road crashes, driver and pedestrian indiscipline remain the primary culprits,” Mr. Amaliba stated. He stressed that the habit of reckless driving, coupled with a disregard for traffic regulations, significantly undermines road safety efforts. The NRSA CEO noted that without immediate corrective measures, these indiscipline practices would continue to cost lives and burden the nation’s healthcare and emergency services.

Mr. Amaliba detailed how his office has begun regular inspections of major roads in Accra, focusing on critical areas such as pedestrian crossings and footbridges. “During these assessments, we have noticed not only a lack of clear road markings but also inadequate street lighting – factors that further compound the hazards created by driver indiscipline,” he added.

In addition to his observations, Mr. Amaliba announced plans to engage with the Roads and Highways Authority to address these issues, including an increase in the number of pedestrian crossings and improved maintenance of road infrastructure. The NRSA CEO reiterated his commitment to collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to implement robust safety measures aimed at reducing the high incidence of road crashes.

With road accidents continuing to claim lives across Ghana, Mr. Amaliba’s comments serve as a call to action for both motorists and pedestrians to adhere to traffic rules and for authorities to enforce regulations more stringently. The NRSA’s proactive approach, as outlined on Adom TV Online, seeks to reverse the disturbing trend and safeguard public welfare on the nation’s roads.
