In a heart-wrenching development, Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey paid a condolence visit to the family of 14-year-old Sampson Seku, who tragically drowned in a galamsey pit at Boadua in the Denkyembour District. Sampson, a form one student at Boadua Roman Catholic Junior High School, left home on March 6, 2025, to play with friends. However, the day turned fatal when the young boy accidentally fell into an active galamsey pit.
Accompanied by members of the District Security Council (DISEC), the minister underscored the devastating impact of illegal mining activities on community safety and the environment. During her visit, Minister Awatey consoled the bereaved family and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to curbing illegal mining practices. She stressed that preventing such tragedies must be a priority, calling for robust enforcement of mining regulations and the reclamation of hazardous sites.
The poignant Galamsey Family Visit has reignited discussions on the urgent need for responsible mining practices and effective measures to protect vulnerable communities. Observers note that the minister’s outreach not only brings comfort to a grieving family but also signals a broader government effort to address the rampant dangers associated with galamsey operations.
