The ECOWAS Council of Ministers, meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sub-region’s sole candidate for Chairperson of the African Union (AU) when West Africa’s turn arrives in 2027.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the decision on Facebook on Friday, December 12. He noted that the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government is expected to formally adopt the endorsement on Sunday.

The AU Chairmanship consists of two key positions:

  • The AU Chairperson (Rotating Head of State) — a one-year political leadership role held by a sitting president.
  • The AU Commission Chairperson — a four-year term as the AU’s chief executive responsible for daily administration, financial oversight, policy implementation, and reporting to the Executive Council.

How the AU Commission Chairperson Is Elected

The election process for the AU Commission Chairperson is rigorous and competitive. Candidates undergo vetting by a Panel of Eminent Africans, which evaluates their qualifications, leadership experience, and suitability.

Each regional bloc then nominates its official candidates. For example, the Eastern Africa region is responsible for presenting candidates for the 2025 cycle.

In recent cycles, candidates have also participated in televised debates, allowing them to present their vision for Africa’s development and engage citizens across the continent.

The final selection is made by the AU Assembly, which elects the Chairperson through a secret ballot requiring a two-thirds majority.

While the rotating AU Chairperson provides high-level political direction, the AU Commission Chairperson serves as the organisation’s administrative and executive head, ensuring the implementation of AU policies and driving the continental agenda.
