Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), believes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is panicking after the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo. He claims the party has lost what it saw as its last line of legal protection.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on May 13, Kwetey said the NPP no longer feels secure. He alleged that the party depended on the Chief Justice to protect them when legal cases came up.
“They’re afraid now,” Kwetey said. “They think the person who may have helped them behind the scenes is gone.”
He rejected accusations that the NDC is targeting the judiciary for political gain. “We’re seeking justice,” he said. “If someone abuses the system, they should face the law.”
Kwetey stressed that no one is above accountability, not even the head of the judiciary. “If she followed the law, there’s no issue. But if misconduct is proven, action must follow,” he added.
He emphasized that this is not about revenge. Instead, it’s about principle. “The country thrives on justice and freedom,” he said. “Creativity and growth must be tied to fairness.”
For Kwetey, the NPP’s fear shows they understand that justice could now proceed without interference. He warned that this might only be the start of deeper political consequences for the ruling party.
