A mining pit collapse at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region has killed at least five people and left several others injured.

The tragedy struck on October 1, 2025, around 4:30 p.m., when an abandoned pit caved in. At the time, between 16 and 20 people were carrying out illegal mining activities.

By 7:30 a.m. the next day, rescuers had recovered nine bodies. Four survivors were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The Nkawie Divisional Police transported the deceased to the Nyinahini Mortuary for identification and further directives.

Residents say the incident exposes the continuing risks of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. Many are calling for abandoned pits to be reclaimed to stop future disasters.

The collapse has sparked renewed pressure on government and regulatory agencies to enforce stricter action against galamsey and protect Ghana’s environment.
