Ghana is in mourning following the death of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, a towering figure in the nation’s political and social landscape.

She passed away in the early hours of Thursday, October 23, 2025, reportedly at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. Though details surrounding her death remain unclear, the news has sparked a nationwide wave of sorrow. She was 76 years old.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, played a pivotal role in Ghana’s democratic history. She founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) after parting ways with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a political movement she helped shape during its early years.

Throughout her life, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings championed women’s empowerment and social development, earning admiration across political divides. Her work inspired generations of Ghanaian women to pursue leadership and advocacy roles.

In recent months, she was seen among national figures paying respects at the Forecourt of the Jubilee House, where wreaths were laid in memory of eight public servants who perished in a helicopter crash. She also attended the Dote Yie funeral rites for the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, alongside her children Amina Agyeman-Rawlings and Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings.
