The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic Garu shooting incident that claimed the life of Bukhari Yahaya, headteacher of Garu D/A Primary and Junior High School.
According to a statement from the GES, Mr. Yahaya was reportedly shot while guiding students to safety during the attack, which occurred on Monday, October 20, 2025.
The GES strongly condemned the violent act, emphasizing that schools must always remain safe and protected environments for teaching and learning.
“Schools must remain safe environments for learning, free from brutality,” the statement read.
In response to the tragedy, the Service extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the staff, and the students of Garu D/A Primary and JHS. The GES also pledged its full support to the affected school community and announced a temporary closure of the institution to ensure safety and recovery.
The Garu shooting incident was part of a larger attack in the Upper East Region, where four people lost their lives after unidentified gunmen opened fire near the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office.
Reports indicate that four armed men on two motorbikes stormed the town and shot indiscriminately, causing panic among residents.
The Garu District Chief Executive, John Abaare, confirmed the fatalities and described the scene as one of chaos and fear.
Meanwhile, the GES has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting teachers and students, promising to restore calm and maintain the safety of all educational facilities in the region.
