The government will introduce a three-shift system at Ghana’s Passport Office to speed up processing. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this as part of efforts to modernize public services and support the 24-hour economy initiative.

The new system will have day, night, and dawn shifts to ensure continuous passport processing. Ablakwa stated that this change will reduce waiting times and help applicants receive passports faster. He urged staff to prepare for the transition, which aims to improve efficiency.

The government has allocated funds in the 2025 budget to expand facilities and enhance security for night shifts. Authorities will also digitize passport services and introduce chip-embedded passports. These new passports will integrate with the National Identification Authority (NIA) system to streamline verification.

The ministry is reviewing passport fees to make standard applications more affordable while adjusting premium service charges. This initiative will create more job opportunities, as the Passport Office will need additional staff for the extended working hours.

Ablakwa assured Ghanaians that the government remains committed to improving public services. The three-shift system will ensure faster passport issuance, reduce congestion, and bring services closer to international standards.
