Ghanaian musician and former University of Ghana SRC President, Guru, has voiced his disappointment over what he believes was a deliberate attempt by some students to sabotage the SRC Artiste Night during his administration.

Speaking in a TikTok live session, the “Lapaz Toyota” hitmaker said certain students contacted musicians and event partners involved in the show, spreading false claims that he had already received full funding for the programme.

Guru clarified that the event had only a GHS 200,000 budget — far below what was needed to stage a major campus concert. “Do you know how much it takes to host an event? Sometimes it costs between ₵500,000 and ₵700,000, but I was working with just ₵200,000. How much would we have even paid Sarkodie or Black Sherif?” he asked.

He explained that he relied on his influence in the entertainment industry and personal relationships with artistes to make the show possible despite limited funds. According to him, this approach aimed to save costs while still delivering a memorable event for students.

However, Guru alleged that some members of the student community contacted artistes and organizers, advising them to back out of the show. He said their actions undermined his efforts and eventually caused the event to flop.

“So no one should come and ask me why the SRC event flopped. It flopped because of sabotage,” he stated firmly. Guru stressed that the failure had nothing to do with poor leadership or planning but rather with intentional interference from a few individuals.
