In the wake of public uproar over the death of a 30-year-old nurse in Yamfo, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has initiated a full-scale police death investigation in the Ahafo Region.

To uncover the circumstances leading to the incident, officers from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) have been dispatched to Yamfo and nearby communities. Their mandate is to determine whether misconduct played a role in the nurse’s death.

The deceased, Richard Antwi Agyei, worked at the Yamfo Health Centre. Reports suggest he was arrested at a location known for Indian hemp smoking and trading. Allegedly, he was assaulted by officers during this arrest and later died at the same health facility where he served.

The case has sparked tensions across the town. During a protest by angry youth on Friday, April 4, residents stormed the Yamfo Police Station, where the involved officers—believed to be from Duayaw-Nkwanta—had sought refuge.

The confrontation escalated further when military personnel intervened to disperse the crowd. One civilian was reportedly shot during the chaos and is currently receiving treatment at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue a formal statement on the findings of the ongoing police death investigation, but public pressure continues to mount for justice and accountability.
