Deputy Director Mustapha Gbande has demanded swift arrests over the disappearance of more than 1,300 containers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Port. These containers, which carried essential electrical equipment for national power distribution, have sparked significant public concern.
Speaking on Citi FM on March 31, Mr. Gbande called for the arrest of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Board Chairman of ECG; Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Minister of Energy; and Samuel Dubik Mahama, former CEO of ECG. He accused them of being responsible for the scandal that has exposed procurement irregularities and mismanagement within the power sector.
The controversy emerged after an investigative report revealed suspicious transactions and anomalies in ECG’s procurement processes. Allegations suggest that some government officials and ECG executives knew about the improper handling of the containers but did not act to stop it.
Mr. Gbande expressed his frustration, stating that evading accountability is unacceptable. He emphasized that Afenyo-Markin’s attempt to dodge responsibility must be met with immediate arrest. “I am calling for the immediate arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Samuel Dubik Mahama, and Matthew Opoku Prempeh because we cannot continue to tolerate corruption,” he declared.
