A deadly armed attack on a Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) checkpoint at Gbintri has left one officer dead and another critically injured.According to reports by Citi News, unidentified gunmen opened fire on the officers manning the checkpoint.
The attack claimed the life of Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II) Rafiq Mohammed, while his colleague, AICO II Oppong Daniel, sustained serious injuries to his jaw and back.
He is currently receiving emergency treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.At the scene, investigators recovered AK-47 shell casings along with a GIS service rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646.
A joint security team led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, the Municipal Police Commander at Gambaga, and DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of GIS, was immediately deployed to secure the area and launch investigations.
Authorities say a full-scale inquiry has been opened to determine the motive behind the attack and to track down the perpetrators. Security officials have assured the public that regular updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
