Dr. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, Economic Adviser to the Vice President, has explained why the suspension hearing of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is being held in-camera. He said the decision protects the dignity and sanctity of the Chief Justice’s office, not just the individual.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, May 24, Dr. Khalid stressed the importance of discretion in such matters. He argued that the high-profile nature of the case calls for a process that avoids public spectacle and potential harm to the judiciary’s reputation.
“This goes beyond an individual,” he said. “It’s about maintaining the dignity of the office, no matter who holds it.”
Dr. Khalid warned that a public hearing could lead to politicisation. He believes it might place the judiciary under unfair public pressure and affect the process’s neutrality.
“Transparency is key in democracy,” he noted, “but some legal processes must remain confidential to ensure fairness and protect institutional credibility.”
He urged the public to trust the legal process and remain patient as events unfold within the framework of the constitution.
