Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor says the Mahama administration did not cause the current energy sector crisis.

He blames it on problems left behind by the previous NPP government.Speaking on PM Express on Joy News, Jinapor said the issue started long before his appointment.

“In December, the last month of the NPP administration, the country was already shedding 500 megawatts,” he said.

“In 2024 alone, power cuts occurred every month.”He recalled how the former energy minister came under heavy criticism.

“This didn’t start today. The backlash was strong even back then,” he noted.

Jinapor agreed that Ghanaians are angry about the outages. “When roads are poor or water stops, people are upset.

But when the lights go out, they get furious,” he added. He made it clear that, although he inherited the problem, he accepts the blame as the sector minister.

“When ECG, GRIDCo, or the PURC make mistakes, the public doesn’t notice their heads. They only know there’s a minister responsible,” he explained.

“That’s why I take full responsibility.”Asked how he plans to fix the issue, Jinapor admitted the role comes with pressure. “As an energy minister, your success depends on how you handle the power crisis,” the host said.

“That’s true,” he responded. “I’ve worked as deputy and acting minister before. Now as the main minister, I fully understand the challenge.”Jinapor said President Mahama appointed him because of his experience and trust in his ability.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to improve this sector. By the time I leave office, things will be far better than I found them.”
