Senior high schools across Ghana have officially reopened for first-year students, drawing thousands of parents and freshers to campuses to complete their placements and finalize admissions.
The nationwide reopening marks the start of the academic journey for nearly 600,000 new students. While the process has been mostly smooth, long lines and extended waiting hours have become a familiar sight at many schools. Parents have expressed a mix of excitement and frustration as they go through the SHS admission queues.
A parent who spoke to JoyNews said, “We got here around 8 a.m., and there were already so many people. Some parents said they had been here since yesterday. For us, it went smoothly—but still, more can be done. Everything was done online, yet when you arrive, you still have to queue and wait for hours. I believe internet challenges may be part of it, but it can be improved.”
Another parent, visibly exhausted after several hours of waiting, shared, “We came here at 6:30 a.m., and it’s now 11:32. It’s not been easy. I wish the schools would give us separate reporting dates to ease the pressure.”
Education authorities have acknowledged the situation and assured parents that the rush will reduce in the coming days. They explained that schools are managing the large numbers with staggered reporting schedules and that the admission window remains open for all placed students.
For now, the SHS admission queues continue to grow as parents and students across the country work tirelessly to secure spots for the new academic year.
