President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to promoting truth and transparency in the media by announcing plans to support the International Fund for Public Interest Media.
Speaking at the High-Level International Conference on Information Integrity and Independent Media in Paris, France, Mahama revealed that Ghana will become the first African nation to make a financial contribution to the fund. The initiative underscores Ghana’s leadership role in advancing independent journalism and combating misinformation and disinformation across the continent.
The conference, attended by representatives from 56 countries, focused on protecting the integrity of public information and strengthening the role of media in democratic societies. The event was organized by the International Fund for Public Interest Media in collaboration with the Forum for Information and Democracy, with strong support from French President Emmanuel Macron.
President Mahama highlighted that Ghana’s contribution forms part of a wider national strategy to ensure citizens have access to reliable information. He stressed that credible journalism is essential to democracy, adding that misinformation threatens trust in institutions and fuels division.
“We must embrace responsible innovation in technology and artificial intelligence to ensure they strengthen democracy rather than weaken it,” Mahama urged world leaders.
The independent journalism Ghana initiative aligns with global efforts to uphold media freedom, counter false narratives, and support journalists working in the public interest.
By taking this step, Ghana positions itself as a regional leader in defending truthful reporting and promoting information integrity worldwide.
