Ministry of Education Develops Inclusive Math Curriculum for Visually Impaired SHS Students
The Ministry of Education is working with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to develop a Mathematics curriculum specifically tailored for visually impaired students in Senior High Schools (SHSs). This initiative aims to provide equal access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers and technical education opportunities for visually impaired students.

Inclusive Education Reforms
The development of the Math curriculum for visually impaired students is part of the government’s broader reforms to make the education system more inclusive. The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, emphasized the need for curricula that cater to the needs of students with disabilities, ensuring they have equal opportunities for education and development.

Ghanaian Sign Language Curriculum
In addition to the Math curriculum, the Ministry is also working on developing a Ghanaian sign language curriculum to support students and institutions for the hearing-impaired. This will enable students who are deaf or have hearing issues to access education in a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Governing Council Inaugurated
The Minister of Education also inaugurated a 12-member Governing Council of the Ghana Education Service (GES), tasked with developing the country’s first-ever digital education policy. The council is expected to work with stakeholders to mainstream information and communications technology (ICT) into the education system, making it integral to the development of learners from kindergarten.

Key Priorities
The Minister emphasized the need for the Governing Council to prioritize:

  • Safety in Schools: Ensuring the safety of students and staff in all educational institutions.
  • Digital Education Policy: Developing a comprehensive digital education policy that integrates ICT into the education system.
  • Infrastructure Development: Implementing data-driven and sustainable measures to improve infrastructure in SHSs and TVET institutions, with the goal of abolishing the double track system.

The Governing Council, led by Prof. Mawutor Avoke, has assured the Minister of its commitment to working with stakeholders to meet the existing exigencies and emerging challenges in the education sector.
