The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth from Tamale have strongly urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the recent appointment of Anthony Sarpong as the acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). This call comes in light of concerns regarding Sarpong’s qualifications and his previous association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly in the context of political opposition.
In a statement issued on January 25, 2025, the NDC Youth expressed their apprehension about Sarpong’s capacity to lead the GRA effectively, citing his alleged involvement in controversial practices during his prior engagements within public service. They argue that his appointment could undermine efforts to enhance transparency and integrity within the revenue collection agency, which is crucial for national development.
“The integrity of the GRA is paramount, especially in these challenging economic times. We cannot afford to have someone at the helm who may not fully represent the values and principles we stand for as a party. We call on President Mahama to revoke this appointment and instead consider candidates who demonstrate a commitment to accountability and ethical governance,” the statement emphasized.
The group highlighted specific instances from Sarpong’s past that they believe warrant a closer examination. They pointed out concerns raised by civil society organizations regarding revenue leakages and the effectiveness of past policies implemented under his oversight. The NDC Youth believes that such controversies compromise the credibility of the GRA and could hinder its ability to meet revenue targets essential for funding critical government programs.
This outcry from the NDC Youth coincides with broader public discourse on appointments within the GRA and their implications for revenue mobilization efforts. Stakeholders from various sectors have been vocal about the need for leadership that fosters trust and encourages collaboration between the government and the citizenry.
