The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it may take legal action against Alan Kyerematen over his decision to name his new political movement the “United Party.”

According to the Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Kabiru, the name is problematic because it carries deep historical and ideological ties to the NPP’s political roots — the United Party (UP) tradition, which dates back to Ghana’s post-independence era.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, Mr. Kabiru accused the former Trade and Industry Minister of deliberately trying to benefit from the legacy and symbolism of the UP tradition. He warned that such a move could mislead the public and distort Ghana’s political heritage.

“I’m sure fair-minded Ghanaians and members of the Republic will test it in court to find out what that name is. Of course, it is a very good case to test to see whether that name will even stand,” the Walewale MP stated.

He further stressed that Mr. Kyerematen and his team should have been “more thoughtful” in selecting a name that reflects their independent political identity instead of one that borrows from the NPP’s historical foundation.

Mr. Kabiru hinted that the NPP’s legal team may soon file a case to challenge the use of the name, adding that the party intends to protect its historical brand and prevent any attempt to appropriate its ideological heritage.

The development follows growing interest in Alan Kyerematen’s movement, which he officially unveiled earlier this year after breaking away from the NPP to pursue what he describes as a “new political path for national renewal.”
