A violent confrontation between the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and illegal small-scale miners at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has tragically resulted in seven deaths and several injuries. The incident took place on the night of January 18, 2025, around 11:00 PM, when about 60 illegal miners breached the mine’s security to access the Deep Decline section.

Equipped with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, machetes, and other weapons, the miners clashed with a military patrol team on Operation HALT II duties. In self-defense, the soldiers returned fire, leading to the deaths of seven miners, with one other sustaining serious injuries. A soldier was also injured during the encounter and has been treated for his injuries.

The Ghana Armed Forces emphasized that military personnel are authorized to use necessary force, including lethal measures, to protect lives and property. They warned illegal miners against encroaching on mining concessions and engaging in armed conflicts, stressing that such actions could have fatal consequences.

The incident has caused significant unrest in the Obuasi community, with reports of property vandalism and vehicles being set ablaze. Social media videos show chaotic scenes with heavy smoke and disruptions in the area.

Authorities are conducting investigations into the incident and have urged the public to remain calm as security measures are strengthened to prevent further escalation. The GAF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national resources and ensuring the safety of civilians and security personnel.
