Accra, Ghana – January 14, 2025

The Office of the President of Ghana has issued a directive for the immediate recall of all diplomatic and service passports currently in circulation. This move comes as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the integrity of Ghana’s passport system and ensure that these privileged travel documents are only held by eligible individuals.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on behalf of the Office of the President, all holders of diplomatic and service passports have been instructed to surrender their documents to the Ministry no later than January 24, 2025. This exercise aims to address concerns about the misuse of such passports and to align with international standards for travel documentation.

“The recall of diplomatic and service passports is a necessary step to maintain the credibility of Ghana’s travel documents,” the statement read. “We are committed to ensuring that these passports serve their intended purpose and are held by only those who meet the required criteria.”

According to government sources, the decision follows reports of unauthorized use of diplomatic and service passports by individuals who no longer qualify for them, including former officials and their family members. The exercise is also expected to facilitate a comprehensive review and re-issuance process to prevent future abuse.

Holders of these passports have been directed to return them to the Passport Office in Accra or to designated regional offices. They are required to provide proof of eligibility for reissuance or surrender the documents for cancellation.

The Office of the President has reassured the public that this measure is not intended to inconvenience legitimate holders but to enhance the nation’s reputation on the global stage.

Citizens and organizations have expressed mixed reactions to the announcement. While some commend the government for taking proactive steps to safeguard the nation’s image, others have raised concerns about potential delays in obtaining replacement passports.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that the reissuance process will be streamlined to minimize disruptions. Officials have also encouraged those affected to comply promptly with the directive to avoid penalties or travel disruptions.

This recall is one of several measures introduced by the administration of President John Dramani Mahama to strengthen public institutions and ensure good governance.
