The National Identification Authority (NIA) has revealed that over 600,000 Ghana Cards remain uncollected at various regional and district offices nationwide. Some of these unclaimed cards have been available since 2018, highlighting a significant backlog in the distribution process.
Despite efforts to address pending applications, the NIA is facing challenges in getting these cards to their rightful owners. The Authority has urged applicants to visit their respective offices and claim their Ghana Cards, which are essential for various services, including banking, healthcare, and voter registration.
To tackle the backlog, the NIA has received 700,000 blank Ghana Cards to print outstanding records, including first-time applications, card replacements, and updates to personal details. A technical team has been established to ensure that the printed cards reach district offices for collection as soon as possible.
The NIA is also working on a more efficient distribution system to facilitate the collection of unclaimed cards, although details of the plan have yet to be disclosed. With the Ghana Card being a mandatory requirement for all Ghanaians aged 15 and above, it is essential that the NIA resolves this issue promptly to avoid any further delays.
