A Ho High Court has sentenced Richard Adikyere, a mason, to life imprisonment for leading the deadly attack that killed Sogakope Assembly Member, Mawutor Adzahli. Justice Daniel Ekow Mensah delivered the ruling five years after the brutal crime.
The court also handed 47-year prison terms to Emmanuel Hedzro and Stephen Adzibolo, who participated in the robbery and killing. All three had denied the charges, but the court found them guilty after a full trial.
Four other men—Obed Ayornu, Michael Sam, and twin brothers Samuel and Christian Zotorvi—admitted their roles earlier through plea deals. Each received a 15-year sentence.
Senior State Attorney Andrews Dodzi Adugu explained how the plan began. In 2020, Hedzro told Adikyere about a “wealthy merchant” in Sogakope and urged him to gather others for a robbery. Hedzro later led him to the real target—Assembly Member Mawutor Adzahli.
On March 1, 2020, around 1:30 a.m., Adikyere, Adzibolo, Ayornu, and Sam broke into Adzahli’s home. They smashed into his room with cement blocks. Adikyere, armed with a pump action gun and pistols, shot Adzahli three times, killing him instantly. The gang then escaped with a large sum of money.
Doctors at the Sogakope District Hospital confirmed Adzahli died from severe gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
Police tracked down the suspects in several locations, including Ashaiman. During questioning, Adikyere confessed to using a stolen pump action gun in the murder.
Justice Mensah described the act as “heinous and callous.” He said the evidence against the accused was overwhelming.
As police led the convicts from the courtroom, Adikyere, handcuffed to Hedzro, tried to attack photographers.
