The legal case involving journalist Latif Iddrisu and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has taken another twist. The state now questions his decision to seek treatment in the United States without a referral from any local hospital.

On Monday, April 14, 2025, during cross-examination, Senior State Attorney Nancynetta Twumasi Asiamah raised concerns in court. She said the documents from Latif’s lawyers showed no referral to either Loma Linda University Medical Center or the Southern California Brain Center, where he received care.

For seven years, the state has worked to discredit Latif’s claim that police officers assaulted him in March 2018 at the CID headquarters. Despite this, medical records confirmed that Latif suffered a skull fracture and other complications.

The state continues to deny any involvement by police officers, even though the journalist’s medical reports and testimony suggest otherwise.

In 2023, the Attorney General told the court that the IGP was advised to settle the matter out of court. However, the IGP at the time, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, rejected that suggestion and chose to continue with the legal process.

Critics say the state is trying to distance itself from responsibility. Its actions in court have appeared inconsistent.

Latif Iddrisu and his employer, Multimedia Group, remain committed to seeking justice. They want the Ghana Police Service held accountable for the alleged attack.

To speed up the case, the current judge—the third since the case began in 2019—set ten court dates for April. But the Attorney General’s legal team missed several of those sessions. As a result, the court lost seven hearing days.

The case will resume on Thursday, April 17, 2025. Senior State Attorney Asiamah is expected to continue cross-examining Latif.
