In a major step toward promoting self-sufficiency and improving inmate welfare, the Sunyani Central Prison has successfully harvested its first batch of vegetables from its newly established Sunyani Prison Farm.

The farm, managed under the leadership of the Regional Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Thompson Otsokpo, has already produced crops such as cabbage and garden eggs. These fresh vegetables are now being used to supplement the daily meals of inmates, ensuring they receive more nutritious and balanced diets.

This farming initiative falls under the Director-General’s Kitchen Support Project, led by Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq), the Director General of Prisons. The national program urges all prison facilities across Ghana to cultivate their own food to cut down on operational costs and ensure food security for prisoners.

Speaking on the impact of the initiative, DDP Otsokpo highlighted the benefits the farm brings to the facility.

“This initiative doesn’t just ease the pressure on our feeding budget—it also ensures inmates enjoy nutritious and balanced meals,” he explained.

Encouraged by the success of the initial harvest, the Sunyani Central Prison administration plans to expand the farm to include additional crops. Officials believe that broadening the Sunyani Prison Farm project will further enhance the welfare of inmates, reduce food expenses, and support ongoing rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
