The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications (GCT) and the Digital Chamber of Ghana (DCG) have officially appointed Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah as their new Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1, 2025.

Sylvia brings nearly two decades of leadership experience across the telecommunications, digital, and FMCG industries. She is recognised for her ability to build partnerships, drive policy advocacy, and lead large-scale projects that have transformed Ghana’s telecom landscape.

Proven Industry Leadership

Her career has spanned high-level roles in multinational companies including MTN Ghana, Tigo (Millicom Ghana), AirtelTigo (AT Ghana), and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC (Diageo/Castel Group).

At MTN Ghana, Sylvia played a key role in securing the 3G License and Submarine Cable Landing rights, milestones that helped establish MTN as Ghana’s market leader in data services.

At AirtelTigo, she provided executive leadership during one of Ghana’s most complex mergers, navigating regulatory approvals, stakeholder engagement, and government relations. She also oversaw the acquisition of an EMI License from the Bank of Ghana, further strengthening the company’s market position.

Her influence extends to public policy and industry advocacy, having served as a former Council Member of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, giving her first-hand knowledge of the Chamber’s governance and mission.

Commitment to Digital Inclusion

Beyond corporate leadership, Sylvia has contributed to national digital development. She served on the Board of Trustees of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), where she worked on strategies for extending connectivity to underserved communities. She was also an Advisory Board Member of the Ghana Innovation Hub, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in Ghana’s digital economy.

Industry Endorsement

Welcoming her appointment, Stephen Blewett, Chair of the Governing Council and CEO of MTN Ghana, said:

“Sylvia’s appointment represents an exciting new chapter for the Chamber. Her deep roots in the telecom sector, coupled with her proven ability to unite stakeholders and deliver tangible results, position her perfectly to lead the Chamber into its next phase of digital growth and innovation.”

Her appointment follows the conclusion of Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey’s tenure in June, marking a new era of leadership for the telecom industry in Ghana.

The two Chambers expressed confidence in Sylvia’s leadership, reaffirming their commitment to support her in advancing the industry’s goals and driving digital transformation for Ghanaians.
