In a move that has reignited public discourse, renowned investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas shared a video in January 2023 capturing Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, making a controversial call for people to attack journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale. This reminder comes years after the tragic murder of Suale on January 16, 2019, a key member of Anas’ Tiger Eye P.I. investigative team.
The video, shared on television and social media in 2023, shows Kennedy Agyapong publicly sharing Ahmed Suale’s images and urging people to “beat him.” This incident occurred during a tense period following the release of the “Number 12” exposé, which unveiled widespread corruption in Ghanaian football.
In the aftermath of Suale’s murder, many fingers were pointed at Agyapong, who vehemently denied any involvement. He maintained that his call for violence did not extend to a call for murder. The video’s resurfacing has, however, brought fresh criticism from civil society groups, journalists, and human rights advocates, who question the culture of impunity and lack of accountability in cases involving attacks on journalists in Ghana.
Anas, in sharing the video, reiterated his call for justice, stating, “No journalist should ever become a target for doing their job. Ahmed’s murder remains a stain on our nation’s conscience.”
The video sparked a wave of reactions across social media in 2023, with many users demanding that the case be reopened and justice served. Others called for stricter measures to ensure the safety of journalists and investigative reporters.
Kennedy Agyapong is yet to issue a response to the renewed attention on his remarks. Meanwhile, activists continue to press for a thorough investigation into Ahmed Suale’s murder, underscoring the need for Ghana to uphold the rule of law and protect freedom of the press.
