Donald Trump opened his Middle East tour in Saudi Arabia with a bold diplomatic and economic move. On the first day, he confirmed a $142bn arms deal and promised to lift all sanctions on Syria.

Speaking at an investment forum in Riyadh, Trump described Saudi Arabia as the United States’ strongest partner in the region. He praised the flow of wealth into the U.S., calling the relationship stronger than ever.
“From the moment we started, we’ve seen wealth that has poured – and is pouring – into America,” he said.

Saudi officials welcomed Trump with full ceremony. A lavender carpet replaced the traditional red, a new symbol of the kingdom’s wildflowers and hospitality. Trump matched the setting with a purple tie.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman greeted Trump personally. Arabian horses formed an honor guard for the presidential limousine. Both leaders later posed for official photos with top officials.

Trump also made headlines by announcing a policy shift on Syria. He declared an end to U.S. sanctions, stating that Syria now deserves “a chance at greatness” after years of war.

Former U.S. ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, supported the decision.
“I visited Syria three months ago. The country is devastated after 13 years of civil war,” he told the BBC. “It needs reconstruction and international funding. Removing sanctions is key.”

Trump is expected to meet Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa while in Saudi Arabia.

The tour also includes stops in Qatar and the UAE. Both countries have pledged to invest $1.4tn in the U.S. over the next decade. These commitments align with Trump’s push to boost the American economy through foreign investment.

Trump previously visited Saudi Arabia as his first foreign destination during his 2017 term. This visit follows a similar strategy focused on diplomacy, defense, and economic growth.
