Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially announced her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement marking her birthday, titled “Dearest Patriots,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful reflected on the party’s internal challenges and recent political setbacks while expressing strong confidence in the NPP’s ability to recover and rebuild.

Addressing party members, the former Ablekuma West Member of Parliament called for unity and renewed dedication to the values that have sustained the NPP since its formation in Saltpond. “A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our stormy face-off with ourselves and our base,” she wrote. “We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We lie not in a good place. However, as our great tradition has demonstrated over the years… we will thrive.”

Drawing a symbolic comparison, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful likened the NPP to a phoenix, asserting that the party would rise from its current struggles to reclaim power from what she described as a “clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent” caretaker NDC government. “This caretaker NDC government is there not just because they are preferred; they are there because they lied their way into government… But we will revive [the belief in us],” she stated.

The former minister emphasised the need for strategic reorganisation, effective grassroots mobilisation, and renewed trust among members to strengthen the party’s foundation. According to her, these elements are crucial in restoring the NPP’s image as a force for development and progress in Ghana’s democratic landscape.

“Across the country and the diaspora, the NPP family comes together as one big family… bound together by the cohesive purpose to re-capture power and do better for ourselves and for mother Ghana,” she said.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful concluded her message with a passionate call to action, urging party members to unite behind her vision and work collectively toward victory. “Patriots, join me, let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome,” she declared.
