Volta Regional Minister James Gunu has urged Akatsi North assembly members to confirm Bless Kodzo Katamani as the District Chief Executive (DCE) without delay. He warned that postponing the process could stall development and affect assembly members’ allowances.
Call for Immediate Action
Speaking at a gathering of chiefs, assembly members, and stakeholders, Gunu stressed the need for cooperation. He emphasized that progress depends on strong collaboration between local government and traditional leaders. According to him, the government is working to restore respect for chiefs through strengthened partnerships.
Furthermore, he pointed out that time is of the essence. “For development, we are endorsing progress. Any delay means you are holding back the district’s agenda,” he stated. He urged the assembly to act swiftly.
Legal Framework and Governance
Presiding Member Patrick Ahiabu explained the legal process for confirming a DCE. He cited the 1992 Constitution and the Local Governance Act. These require at least two-thirds of assembly members to approve the nominee before they can assume office.
Ahiabu also noted that this process promotes participatory governance. It allows local representatives to have a voice in leadership decisions.
Parliamentary Support for the Nominee
Member of Parliament Peter Nortsu Kotoe joined the call for swift approval. He reminded the assembly that development projects should not suffer setbacks due to administrative delays.
“We all want progress for Akatsi North. Development projects must continue without hindrance. I urge you, our honorable assembly members, to approve the President’s nominee so that we can move forward,” Kotoe said.
Ensuring Strong Local Leadership
Akatsi North, like many districts in Ghana, relies on effective local governance. Key areas such as roads, education, healthcare, and job creation need strong leadership to function.
Katamani’s nomination comes at a crucial time. The district is working to realign its development priorities. His confirmation would allow him to oversee projects in education, health, agriculture, and social welfare.
The appeals from the Minister, the Presiding Member, and the MP highlight the urgency. Their message is clear: Akatsi North cannot afford leadership delays.
As assembly members prepare to vote, the district awaits their decision. The outcome will determine whether Akatsi North moves forward or faces further setbacks. For the people, the need for progress has never been more urgent.
