Former England striker Wayne Rooney believes Liverpool lack leadership as the defending Premier League champions continue to struggle this season.
The Reds have lost four straight league matches and currently sit seventh on the table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Their recent 3–2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday added to earlier losses against Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United, marking a disappointing start for Arne Slot’s side.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, the Manchester United legend said Liverpool’s slump is alarming and highlighted the attitude of senior players as a major concern.
“No one saw this coming. It’s hit them quick and hard, and they’re struggling to find a way out,” Rooney said.
He questioned the leadership shown by Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, both of whom recently signed new contracts.
“They’ve not really led that team this season. Their body language tells you a lot, and right now it doesn’t look good. They’re the top two players, and if their body language isn’t right, that affects everyone else,” he explained.
Rooney added that if he were part of Liverpool’s management or a fan, he would be “deeply concerned” about the team’s mentality and lack of direction.
While Liverpool’s struggles continue, Arsenal appear to be in excellent form. Mikel Arteta’s men have won four league games in a row, keeping three consecutive clean sheets, including a 1–0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Rooney praised Arsenal’s consistency and said this could be the year they finally lift the Premier League trophy for the first time since 2004.
“The squad is good enough now. They’ve had the experiences of coming close before, but I think they’re ready for it,” Rooney stated. “If they don’t win it this time, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a change in management.”
