The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely recognized as Chairman Wontumi, is set to honour an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, October 6, 2025, as part of ongoing investigations into Akonta Mining Limited.
According to his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, Wontumi will fully cooperate with the police during the session scheduled for 10 a.m. at the CID headquarters in Accra.
“We have been officially invited, and we are ready to appear before the CID today. We will be there at 10 a.m. as requested,” Appiah-Kubi confirmed in an interview with Citi FM.
This appearance follows a warning issued by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, on October 3, cautioning that Wontumi would face arrest if he failed to comply. Dr. Ayine revealed that charges against the NPP chairman have already been signed and that the case had previously been delayed due to missing dockets allegedly hidden under the former administration.
He emphasized that the matter is now being handled with renewed urgency to ensure accountability.
However, Wontumi’s lawyer has criticized the Attorney General’s statement, calling it unnecessary since his client has always cooperated with investigators.
“The comment from the Attorney General was surprising. We have always respected the law and have no reason to avoid the CID’s invitation,” Appiah-Kubi stated. “We will honour it as responsible citizens.”
