Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known widely as Chairman Wontumi, now finds himself at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) following his transfer from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The case has sparked growing attention nationwide. Reports confirm that NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is working to meet Wontumi’s bail conditions—GHS 50 million with two justified sureties. Although EOCO granted him bail on Wednesday, May 28, the terms remain unmet.

Since the transfer, NPP Members of Parliament and senior party officials have visited the NIB premises. Supporters also gathered in large numbers to show solidarity, leading to a rise in security measures around the facility.

Wontumi was first arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. Shortly after his release, EOCO took him into custody.

Minority MPs staged a protest on Thursday, May 29. They marched from Parliament to EOCO headquarters, demanding Wontumi’s release. Their protest disrupted traffic and prompted heavy police deployment. The MPs resumed parliamentary duties the next day.

Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed the ongoing investigation. He revealed that Wontumi faces accusations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Justice Srem-Sai made a public statement via his official X (formerly Twitter) account. He explained that EOCO is leading the Wontumi investigation and has already begun recovering assets suspected to be linked to criminal proceeds.

“Suspect Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering,” he stated.

As the Wontumi investigation continues, public interest grows, and party members remain on high alert.
