Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has made history as Ghana’s first female Vice President, marking a significant milestone in the country’s political history. Her ascension to the nation’s second-highest office is a testament to her lifelong commitment to education, leadership, and empowering women and youth.
Sworn into office on January 7, 2025, by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo at the Independence Square in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s remarkable journey from academia to politics reflects years of breaking barriers and shaping history.
Born on November 22, 1951, in Cape Coast, Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s academic journey began at Wesley Girls’ High School, a foundation that paved the way for her future success. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and French from the University of Cape Coast (UCC), later completing a Master’s degree in English. Her academic excellence then took her to York University in Canada, where she achieved a PhD in English Literature.
A distinguished academic, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang spent over three decades at UCC, eventually becoming the institution’s first female Vice-Chancellor from 2008 to 2012. During her tenure, she spearheaded reforms in education, drove infrastructure development, and upheld the university’s commitment to academic excellence.
Her political journey began in 2013 when she was appointed Minister of Education under President John Mahama. During her tenure, she implemented transformative policies, notably the Free Senior High School program and initiatives to improve teacher welfare, making education more accessible and equitable across Ghana.
In 2020, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang broke new ground when she was nominated as the running mate for John Mahama. Although the election result was not in their favor, her unyielding dedication and strong advocacy for women and youth in Ghana earned her a second opportunity to serve alongside Mahama. On January 7, 2025, she was inaugurated as the nation’s first female Vice President.
