President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians of his administration’s unwavering commitment to addressing the nation’s energy challenges and preventing the return of “dumsor,” the frequent power outages that previously disrupted daily life.
Speaking at the National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana on Thursday, January 9, President Mahama acknowledged the pressing challenges in the energy sector and emphasized the urgency of finding lasting solutions.
“We are assuming office at a critical time in our nation’s history. Ghana is faced with significant challenges. But that is exactly the reason why you elected us. We will transparently let you understand what those challenges are, and we will take responsibility for solving them,” he affirmed.
The President highlighted the looming threat of power outages due to insufficient fuel supplies for power generation but reassured citizens of his administration’s readiness to tackle the crisis.
“There is a threat of power outages, but my brothers and sisters, don’t despair. You elected us to solve the problems, not to put the blame on anybody else,” Mahama stated.
To address the issue, President Mahama convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting on January 8 to explore innovative solutions for stabilizing the energy supply.
“I can assure you that the ideas presented are practical and promising. We will make sure your lights stay on, and we will not return to dumsor,” he declared.
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has estimated a need for $90 million to purchase alternative fuel to sustain power generation during the planned maintenance shutdown of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) from January 20 to February 16, 2025.
President Mahama stressed that collaborative and immediate action is essential to overcome the challenges and called on Ghanaians to trust his administration’s dedication to ensuring a reliable energy supply.
